Minister Eduard Hellvig and Mayor Oprescu Laid Bases for Unblocking MRDT - Bucharest Municipality Collaboration

22 August 2012

The Minister of Regional Development and Tourism, Eduard Hellvig and the General Mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, agreed today to unblock projects of interest for Bucharest, whose solving was delayed until now. The rehabilitation, modernisation and equipping of the ambulatory units of the Dr. Victor Gomoiu Clinic Hospital for Children and the Foisor Orthopaedic Clinic Hospital, the modernisation of the Piata Sudului road infrastructure, as well as the planning of the tourism circuit on the Floreasca and Tei lakes, the Esplanada project are among the topics covered.

The two met today, 22 august 2012, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism, in the presence of State Secretaries Marcel Bolos and Iulian Matache, of Deputy Mayor Marcel Nicolaescu and of the chief architect of the Capital, Gheorghe Patrascu.

"For us, as ministry, Bucharest is a priority not only because it is the capital of the country, but because it represents the most important pole of economic and tourism development. From my point of view, Bucharest must be supported intensively because a large part of the population, as well as of Romania's economic and cultural activity, is concentrated here. It is a visit card we must permanently build, so we can present it without reserve. This is why I am fully open and I extend my full support for projects aimed at contributing to the development of Bucharest," said Minister Eduard Hellvig.

In his turn, General Mayor Oprescu said "It was a normal, natural meeting between two institutions that should cooperate continuously and seriously in the interest of the citizens. Despite the turmoil on the political scene, "someone" must concern about the real problems of the Romanian society. Bucharest is the capital city, the most powerful city, the engine for the country's development. My mission, duty and responsibility as General Mayor is to be consistent and constant in my actions and principles to make an efficient constructive administration in the interest of the inhabitants of Bucharest. From this perspective, at today's meeting we have discussed about the development and creation of a working basis for the implementation of concrete projects in the fields of tourism and modernisation of the city, about the ever higher absorption of European funds at the level of Bucharest, about concrete proposals for measures and legislative and normative changes to increase efficiency in terms of retrofitting earthquake-prone buildings, as well as about the facade law."

At the meeting, there were established responsibilities and deadlines for projects of common interest, as well as the organisation of regular meetings between representatives of the two institutions.
Minister Eduard Hellvig raised the problem of the Henry Coanda district ANL buildings, receiving confirmation from the General Mayor of Bucharest that the City Hall will allocate funds for paving Nisipoasa Blvd in this district.

The two parties discussed the possibility of drawing up a Regional Development Programme adapted to Bucharest for the next programming period, taking into account the specific needs of urban and regional development. Minister Eduard Hellvig and Mayor Sorin Oprescu agreed to expedite the adoption of the decisions regarding objectives of interest for the Capital and to reduce bureaucracy and established the set up of a joint working group of the Ministry and the City Hall for problems relating to the development of the Capital, but also for attracting European funds. At the same time, the two officials agreed to initiate a pilot project to finance the restoration of historic buildings, in the context of the new Historic Centres Rehabilitation Programme.
